Riding Unlimited, a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1990, is a therapeutic riding and carriage driving horsemanship program for individuals with physical, mental, and emotional disabilities, and provides safe and affordable horseback riding instruction in Dallas, Tarrant, Denton, Wise, and Collin counties in North Texas. We are a North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) Premier Accredited Center. Riding Unlimited's mission is to provide a therapeutic riding and driving horsemanship program dedicated to enabling the North Texas disabled community by enhancing their physical, social, educational, and emotional abilities. Our organization was founded by Jim Barton, who was born with athetoid cerebral palsy and cannot feed himself or sign his name. Riding Unlimited began in a leased facility with six borrowed horses, 70 volunteers, three instructors and 24 riders. In 1997, we purchased a 49-acre ranch to meet the increasing demands of the program and expand the number of riders that could be served. In 2007, more than 290 volunteers worked over 13,000 hours to assist a program director, five instructors, and 14 donated horses in providing more than 1,850 hours of therapeutic horsemanship instruction to over 70 individuals with disabilities per week.
