KEEN LA is a volunteer-led nonprofit organization that provides recreational and sports opportunities for children and young adults (ages 5 -- 14) with mental and physical disabilities at no cost to their families or caregivers. KEEN Los Angeles is modeled on an innovative program established in Oxford, England by Elliot Portnoy. KEEN Los Angeles started in 2007 and with the help from board members, parents and volunteers, KEEN Los Angeles is expanding to create more programs for children with disabilities. Today, KEEN Los Angeles serves many young people with disabilities and currently offers both sports and swim programs. As KEEN Los Angeles attempts to create more programs and provide services for more underserved Los Angeles residents, we are opening our doors to new young athletes and volunteers. As KEEN grows, it is committed to maintaining its basic ideals: providing free recreational opportunities to children and young adults with disabilities by providing them with trained volunteers for fun, noncompetitive activities. Ultimately, KEEN seeks to develop each athlete's self-esteem and confidence, as well as recreational skills and talents, and to increase each athlete's ability to participate in a broader range of recreational activities and environments.
