The Foundation for Positively Kids, Incorporated is a 501 (c) (3), non-profit agency providing comprehensive care for Southern Nevada's severely disabled, including medically dependent and/or terminally ill, children. Medically fragile children are medically stable, yet either by birth or through accident, require skilled nursing services, therapies (physical, occupational, speech), and/or equipment to enhance or sustain their lives. These children range in age from birth to 18 years of age and suffer from cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, cancer, heart and lung disease, spina bifida, and any number of other conditions that threaten their ability to survive without proper medical care. The program was organized in 1999 to meet the growing need for specialized care for medically fragile children and their families. 'The mission of Positively Kids is to provide quality of life for medically fragile, medically dependent, and terminally ill children, age birth to 18, and their families.'
Positively Kids currently provides services for over 300 children and their families living in Clark County and Southern Nevada. Parents, physicians, health care agencies, the school system, and other community resources refer medically fragile/terminally ill children who can benefit from skilled nursing and/or therapeutic services. Licensed nurses, physicians, therapists, social workers, and counselors specially trained in caring for medically fragile/terminally ill children provide skilled nursing care, individual and family counseling, and support services for these special needs children and their families. Rehabilitative services include, but are not limited to: (1) skilled care (changing dressings, administering medications, changing feeding tubes, changing breathing tubes, etc.) and (2) therapeutic care (motor skills development, music therapy, cranial-sacral therapy, reflexology, hippotherapy, and other compatible alternative therapies. Skilled professionals provide many of these rehabilitative services in the homes of the children, thus relieving parents of the emotional trauma and the cost of a hospital stay or doctor's office visit.
