The mission of Courageous Sailing Center is to provide a fun, safe, accessible environment that promotes positive life skills and values by means of the sport of sailing.
COURAGEOUS offers, along with various partner organizations, sailing programs specifically tailored towards autistic youth and children with diabetes. In addition, COURAGEOUS is the official sailing center and practice site for the Special Olympics of Massachusetts (SOMA) sailing team, about half of whose members are minors, and operates the largest and oldest blind sailing program in the country.
The COURAGEOUS Summer Youth Program is our largest and most intensive offering, serving approximately 1,000 children in 2007 and an estimated 1,200 in 2008 (we also serve approximately 250 children each year in our fall/winter/spring programs).
The target population of this program is disadvantaged children ages 8 to 18 residing in the City of Boston. We will concentrate our outreach in communities with significant low-income and ethnically diverse populations. Typically, 75% of our students reside directly in Boston and 50% come from families with incomes under $75,000.
