Children's Center for the Visually Impaired

The Children's Center for the Visually Impaired (CCVI) was founded on September 27, 1952, as the Kansas City Nursery School for the Blind, with support from the Junior League of Kansas City, Missouri, the Kansas City Association for the Blind, and the Delta Gamma Alumnae Chapter. The mission of CCVI is to prepare young children who are blind or visually impaired, including those with multiple disabilities, to function at their highest potential in the sighted world.
CCVI is the only school in the Kansas City area that offers specialized instruction for blind and visually impaired children, including those with multiple disabilities, from birth through school age. The Infant Program provides regularly scheduled home-based instruction and therapies and Center-based evaluations of the infant's developmental progress, beginning as soon as the baby is diagnosed.
Preschool and kindergarten classes at the Center continue the child's preparation for entry into the public or private school systems. Speech, occupational, physical and aquatic therapies, braille instruction, orientation and mobility, and low vision training are additional services available.
CCVI provides family support services, including a parent group that meets regularly.
