Barrier Free Living Holding Inc.

Barrier Free Living's missison is to help people with disabilities and their children live safe, dignified, and independent lives.
Barrier Free Living began in 1979 as a federally-funded Research and Demonstration Project to work with New Yorkers who had newly become disabled. In 1982, it became the first new program to be funded by the NYC Department of Mental Health in 10 years. BFL's expertise in working with people who have disabilities and have also experienced domestic abuse and/or homelessness is now well known not only in New York, but also in other regions across the United States. Since 1986, we have provided nonresidential domestic violence services to people with disabilities and their children.

In 2006, we opened Freedom House, the first totally accessible residential shelter in the United States for domestic abuse survivors with disabilities and their children, many of whom also have disabilities.
